Former President of the Maldives among top speakers for first Expo 2020 World Majlis on climate change

DUBAI, – Global thought-leaders and decision-makers will gather at Expo 2020 Dubai on Sunday to discuss how to tackle two of the most serious threats facing our planet: climate change and biodiversity loss.

Those attending the Climate & Biodiversity World Majlis include His Excellency Mohamed Nasheed, former President of the Maldives; Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change; and Khalid Abuleif, Chief Negotiator for Climate Agreements, Ministry of Energy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Key topics to be tackled over the course of the week include developing a legal status for nature; the status of climate negotiations today; and the Earthshot Prize – one of the most prestigious environment prizes in the world, designed to incentivise change in the next 10 years – whose winner will be announced on 17 October.

Other prominent thought-leaders and decision-makers participating in the World Majlis include Sir Tim Smit KBE, the Co-Founder of the UK’s Eden Project and the creative genius who has been a pivotal figure behind Expo 2020’s Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion; and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, which is one of the Earthshot Prize’s Global Alliance Founding Partners, alongside Expo 2020 Dubai, as well as the Global Trade Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai.

The World Majlis programme is a series of 52 conversations that offers its own special version of Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, creating a forum built around one key instrument: the power of conversation.
